Rockucation Question This Week July 9th, 2023!

Last Week’s Rockucation Question:

There are two songs that are considered the first rock songs to use distortion, one in 1951 America, where the amp was damaged and they recorded anyway. The second which was done deliberately and most well known was in 1964 by a British band. What are the two songs and who recorded them?

Rocket 88 by Jackie Brenston and The Delta Kats (Ike Turner) and The Kinks, You Really Got Me.

Dave Champagne, North Scituate, RI pointed out to me that another song predated these two. The song is from 1947 by Bob Willis. He had a song called “Bob Wills Boogie”. Robert Junior Barnard played guitar for the song. It was during an experimental time in electric instruments. The main reason it didn’t fall under my purview is Bob Willis was the king of Swing during that time. Hence why it didn’t get mentioned in the rock circle. You can decide on your own once you listen to it here.

Nina McCarthy, Westerly, RI.

This week’s Rockucation question is:

This band that hails from Germany still has their original lineup. In one of the band's videos they actually bleed, the cuts you see are real. The name of the band is from an actual plane crash that took place at an air force base. The band is known for their pyrotechnics and sexual innuendos on stage. Who is the band?
